Question: let g(x) = 3x - 3 + |x + 5|. Find all values of a which satisfy the equation g(a) = 2a + 8.
What in the hell is this even asking me to do? To my mind, these seem like two utterly different equations and I have no idea how they relate to each other. Tell me why.
First of all, stop saying "maths". It is "math". Otherwise you sound British and we certainly can't have that.
Second of all g(a) = 3a - 3 + ABS(a + 5) so just figure out when does
3a - 3 + ABS(a+5) = 2a + 8 ?

Pretend they're two different functions and see where they intersect. g(x) is a line plus an absolute value function (which makes a "V"-shape). g(a) is a line of a different slope. when do the lines intersect?
So you can just ignore the fact that the variables are different and substitute a for x in the other equation?

I'd bet quite a bit that the poster is studying for the SAT, as this is a classic SAT Math question. You should really refrain from being snarky when it's obviously been too long since you were a student for you to think of things like the SAT.
That's a really poorly worded question.
The way it is worded, g(x) = 3x - 3 + abs (x + 5) doesn't even matter.
So, a can be between negative infinity and infinity to satisfy the equation.
Then again, it's been a while since I've done that stuff...
You're supposed to multiply g(a) by the variable y, which gives you a summary of your life.

Basically like an intersecting lines question, except that because of the absolute value, there's the potential for two solutions.
x>=-5; g(x)=4x+2
x<-5; g(x)=2x-8
does y=2x+8 intersect both of those parts?
I can simplify this:
A train (a) leaves Chicago at noon on a sunday travelling 65 mph eastward.
A truck (g) is travelling westard on I80 from NYC at 67 mph. The total distance between them is 1123 miles.
If you figure the time it will take for their paths to cross and the amount ofmph at impact if they collide, then you will find you answer.
