Since I started running in Vibram FiveFingers a year ago, my feet have widened noticeably So much so that I have trouble finding a comfortable flat; they invariably squeeze my forefoot painfully and cause blistering. I really need a good pair of flats as Vibrams don't lend themselves well to wet or muddy weather running. Can anyone suggest a good flat with a wide toe box? The wider the better.

Seems like weight would be the determining factor there, my friend.
I've always had very wide feet, and the widest flat I've found is the Mizuno Ronin 2. The Ronin 3, which just came out, appears to be slightly narrower, but is still probably wider than anything out there.
Hope this helps, and maybe others have more suggestions.
You're probably building up muscle in your feet. When I first started running, after about a year of steady training, my feet grew a half size, and no, I wasn't a youngster at the time. In 2009 I was down for nearly six months due to injury, and when I returned to running, my shoes were noticably looser. They've since filled out again.
If you want to go back to the old foot size, stop wearing Vibrams and find a shoe with some support.
But I *like* wearing Vibrams. They're comfortable and I've gotten faster for it, as well as tightening up my stride. I don't mind a larger shoe size, I just need a good flat that will let me run roads and trails in wet weather.

If you mean shortening your stride then that is counter-productive. They key is to keep a wide, long stride but increase the turn-over. Not to sacrifice stride length for turnover.

Geb and the Moroccan had noticeably wide/strong-looking feet, while Mottram had puny feet.
Actually no it doesn't. The first foot is disgusting and I guarantee you that the person that foot belongs to is incredibly slow runner...
The second foot of Bikila looks unremarkable to me. In fact it looks just like the foot of any shod runner. It looks nothing like the first foot.
