I read today's Brief Chat with Kara and Alberto and came away puzzled. It appears that Alberto puts a lot of emphasis on running 800s and miles at WAY faster then MP. In fact, the paces mentioned in the article are roughly at 3k-5k race pace for Kara. Doing a ton of V02Max work, and a long tempo (up to 20 miles) is going to make you one heck of a 5k-1/2 marathoner... but it's not the way to train for the marathon.
Kara and Dathan are teaching their bodies to burn fuel quickly with all the V02Max work (which Alberto probably doesn't think of as V02Max work because he is assuming some projected level of fitness that doesn't jive with reality, rather then actual current fitness). They need to learn to burn fuel SLOWLY. More work like 3x3M starting at MP and working down to 1/2MP + 5 sec, in-and-out 1000s at MP-15 seconds, MP+15 seconds, 4x2M at 1/2 MP, etc are what are going to get Kara to 2:20.
IT IS NOT running mile repeats in 4:50 or 800s in 2:20.
I an a supporter of Alberto. What he has does with Galen and what he did with Adam Goucher is/was quite amazing. How he has prepared Kara and Ritz and Yoder-Begley for the track-half marathon... amazing. Alberto is by all accounts, a GREAT.... PHENOMENAL even... 5k-1/2 marathon coach. BUT he has completely missed the boat on the marathon. Not one hugely successful marathoner relative to their track success.
Is it because, quite simply, he has his athletes doing the wrong workouts for the marathon? I believe so.9
