I have seen something like 63 threads in the past year asking if Google Maps / Gmaps pedometer is accurate enough to measure training routes, tracks etc.
Every single time, someone posts that they measured their local high school track and got 399.7 or 400.2 meters and therefore it is not accurate.
Some luddite will generally jump in saying that these "gizmos" are not useful for serious runners.
Here is an idea: Find an outdoor pool in your area, as in an Olympic-sized (50m) pool. Preferably one that a serious club team uses for competition. Any such pool will be precisely 50m - they have to be laser-sighted to be certified. Zoom in and measure it, corner to corner, not on a diagonal. Note the result.
Gmaps for the win!
