yeah, I've heard of people in your situation and it really sounds terrible, its obviously a messed up system. Sidetrack: advice for all incoming college frosh, get a student credit card (but NEVER use it).

Back on track: It sounds to me like all you really care about is getting a mortgage. I have no useful advice except maybe getting a $30,000 house, then you just pay in cash. Maybe marry someone with a credit history?

also, where are you applying? go to your bank and beg them to give you a credit card...like literally beg them, it can be liek a $500 limit, just get yourself something, if you have a $30k account with them, I bet they would like to keep you happy.

I already begged my bank. It was marked and sent up for a second review. Negative. We f***ed up because all my loans were in my parents' names. Paid through them. Bonehead move. That being said, all these companies don't consider college loans for credit history, apparently.

First off get a debit card. Nearly every bank or credit union will get one for you, often its free. That will give you many of the payment options you get with a credit card, but you often can't use them for hotels or rental cars.

Next look into a credit union. Many also issue credit cards and you can build a payment history that way.

Something seems very off here that you can't get a simple credit card.

You should be able to get a $500 limit even with no credit history, especially from your bank.

Is someone using your SS# and taken your identity?

This isn't adding up.

What is your credit score? Have you seen your credit report?

I'm actually surprised the dude can't get a credit card through his bank. Most banks will issue a low limit credit card to customers who maintain enough collateral in their account to cover the limit. Sounds like collateral on a $1K - $5K limit wouldn't be a problem for the OP.

You're missing something. There's no way that you can't get a credit card if everything you say is true.

We need to know what your bureau looks like. The student loans were in your parents name. You ever have a utility in your name while you were at school? Anything at all?

If you were a complete blank on the bureaus and now you have 3 or 4 inquiries all of a sudden this could be considered odd.

I looked at my credit score a few months ago (was rejected multiple times before that) and it was around 700, I don't remember the exact number. The problem with my bank is that a couple of years ago I moved all my money out when I could get better savings rates, even though they all suck now. So my money was spread to a checking account, trading account, savings account, a Roth IRA, and a 401K.

I've thought about trying with the bank I have the Roth (~$18,500) and trading account (~$4,000). I'm just paranoid that the more I keep getting rejected, the worse my credit score will become. (Tell me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the more companies that check your score is reflected in a negative way. Please correct me if I'm wrong)

Get an Orchard Bank Card, wait 12-24 months, get a better (the one you want) card. Wait 12-24 more months get a kick ass card from Navy Federal Credit Union for 20K or more.

What bank do you use? Go to some local banks and ask them if they'll give you a card if you join. Chase just gave me a credit card with my checking/savings account when I joined with about $2k to my name.

There must be something weird about your past. Like the earlier poster, I immediately wondered if you have ever had a monthly payment such as a utility, car payment or cell phone to your name.

That's the problem. I own my car (bought it in cash) and pay utilities by check to the guy upstairs. I've always paid in cash. Guess that's the problem...

I know where you're coming from because I owe no money, I paid off my undergraduate student loans way ahead of schedule (there were graduate deferments delaying the payment for a few years, though), and yet I could not even get a cellphone on my own, having been twice turned down! Then I tried to get my credit score to understand how in the hell every ne'erdowell in this country with tons of debt has a cellphone and I, with no debt whatsoever, cannot get one, and I could not even get my credit score. To get it online I had to answer some questions about whether I had lived on this or that street, and I answered correctly that I hadn't and was then denied the chance to see my credit score! So, not only do they fail to give "credit" to people with no debts, they often have wrong information reflected in the credit score and have no clear procedures for justifying that negative information used in lowering scores is accurate, but they may get basic things like your address wrong.
