Manzano, wheating, Lagat, Lomong, Webb all have legit shots at a medal in 2012 plus a whole slew of other Americans that could be at that level by 2012. Not saying its going to happen or likely to happen but there is a very slight realistic possibility that it could happen. Certainly everyone that makes the team will have a good shot at a medal unless there is a massive upset at the trials (ie. at 3:35 guy makes the team.)

The US needs trials like the Kenyan trials where they do pay some attention to the actual trials but also will chose to select someone who doesn't make it at the trials but who is clearly the best shape and is training to at peak the Olympics instead of the trials.
I don't think that is the best idea. The US has a pretty fair system. Athletes know they have to preform at the trials and usually the best athletes get sent. Yes, sometimes upsets happen but that is just part of the game. By having a subjective criteria you let sport politics come into play and that is never a good thing. I think the only thing to US can do to improve the process is to move the trails to either right before the Olympics or far enough away that athletes come double peak (like in late April or early May)
It could happen, then a week later, 3 other guys could get medals. It'll be WIDE open.
