The foam roller isn't hitting the spots hard enough for me anymore so I want to upgrade to a pvc pipe. Can someone recommend a thickness and diameter to buy please?

I just went with the three foot by six inches. It works well for the quads and hamstrings, but I wouldn't use it on your it band.
Can you elaborate as to why you wouldn't use it on the IT band?
It feels way too hard. I've heard of people who wrap a pvc in towels to soften it up, but I just use a straight pipe.
You can buy a foam roller that has the PVC inside it. That way the foam cushions you but you still get the benefit of the hard PVC. They're awesome and I've used it on my ITB with great results. http://www.performbetter.com/detail.aspx_Q_ID_E_4592_A_CategoryID_E_235
you could also get some PVC, and a thin yoga mat and cut enough of the yoga mat to fit around the pipe and glue the mat onto the pipe...it'll still be hard. depending on what kind of mat you get, itll be thin enough to be firm, but thick enough to not kill your legs...
I use 1.5" diameter pvc pipe and it works great...
PVC pipe works OK if you just roll the muscle bellies, but it isn't flexible enough to conform to many areas of the body, such as around muscle attachments, where adhesions tend to accumulate. It high-centers on the bony areas and doesn't put enough pressure on the low spots. A tennis or lacrosse ball may be a better option. Best of all, though, is the RumbleRoller: www.rumbleroller.com. It feels softer than the pipe, but is more aggressive at manipulating muscle tissue.
Another good addition to your collection of torture devices, er.. I mean massagers, is a softball. I have a foam roller, "the stick", a TP quadballer and a wood rolling pin. The softball has been getting the most use lately.
