I am a high school track and field coach. I have 2 distance runners that kick their feet out to the side when they are bringing their foot behind them and up, after pushing off the ground. Any ideas on how to correct this?

Assuming this is not a troll, why are they "pushing off" from the ground? That's not my idea of good form at all. Your hamstrings are big muscles - they don't need the foot to "push off" to move fast. Pushing is bad form - leads to injury.
The Pose Method talks at length about pulling the feet up behind you, and prescribes many drills. I believe in the theory, but it can be tedious to apply.
Last but not least, kicking feet out to the side seems much more common among women. May have something to do with the angle of their hips - unsure how or whether to force a correction.
just sayin wrote:

Nice troll work.
Steve Mugness has done a lot of research on the subject. I would highly suggest checking his blog out.
I have the same problem. I went to a chiropractor and found out I have anteverted hips, which basically means my femurs twist inward in my hip sockets. I did 6 weeks of training to strengthen my hips, hamstrings, and glutes, which has really helped my knees keep from turning in when I land. I'd suggest trying a chiropractor!
