Can't speak about the coaching nowadays, as I was there when it was still a Division III school. Back then, there were some great places to run (on the roads), with rolling hills and not much traffic, very scenic. There were some trails, but one can assume they might have been developed into housing, etc.
SBU, having been a multi-sport DIII school --football was a club sport for my first two years there-- it will take many years to build nationwide sports cred. People outside the eastern seaboard don't really know of it.
The only pro player from SBU I can think of is major league pitcher, Joe Nathan.
In the mid 60s there was a big marijuana bust at the school. Might have been the first of its kind at a college/university. Made nationwide headlines with Walter Cronkite giving story on the nightly news.
