I just watched it and was impressed. If he continued at that pace it'd be a 1:44 800m not to shabby for indoor practically by himself.

THE RACE
If he continued at that pace? a 1:18 is about a 1:50 equivalent. Very very solid for this early in the year, but this isn't earth shattering.
Don't ask me to explain why, but a 1:18 for a:
400m specialist is equal to about 48x
For a 400/800 guy it's equal to about a 1:50x
For a 800/mile type it's equal to about a 1:49x
Assuming he is a 800/mile type, 1:18 means he is starting the season out in 1:49x shape, which probably means he should be around 1:47x come March. In a regular year, the top NCAA guys usually start out around 1:50-1:51; these are the guys that end up running 1:47-1:48. There are so many really good 800m guys in the NCAA this year, that I am expecting to see several of the top guys open up with 1:48-1:49 which in theory means we should should several indoor 1:46s this year.
no no no, you got it all wrong, if he continued at that pace for 50k he would have run 1 hour and 44 minutes! not even josh cox could hope to break that 50k world record!!!
Marshall Burt would be proud of you, son.

If he continued that pace vertically for 2.45 meters he'd set a word high jump record. Not too shabby for indoor practically by himself.
His time while a nice opener is not overly impressive. I believe a number of East Coast collegians have run that or faster so far this season on 200M tracks. Talented individual, but still very early.
Also, UW Dempsey:
Not a legal track besides being over-sized. Also has no curb just cones which is unacceptable. Has raised runways for the jumps and no stands .... plus is only 5 lanes. Great place to run, but like running outdoors. Like said previously, worth 1:50++.
caz ran 1:16.xx last year.
I ran a 55 400 this year, does that mean if I kept going I could run 1:50? Damn! I shouldn't have stopped!
Trackshark is the worst website with good information I have ever been to. I clicked the link and ended up on a women's heat of the 400. I ended up giving up after searching for 30 seconds.
The site is horrible.
Found it over on Flotrack.

800 is much much much harder than the 600.

No actually they both are.
Here are the marks in the woman's heat 3. Francis was less than 9 seconds back of Greer, or less than 12 back for 800m; if Greer's mark is 'national' class, her's is world class at 1:46.47.
1 Francis, Phyllis Oregon 1:27.38
2 Kesselring, Anne Oregon 1:29.73
3 Roesler, Laura Oregon 1:29.80
4 Crofts, Helen Simon Fraser 1:29.84
Still, 1:18s are good marks and 1:27s even better.
I was surprised how mediocre the field events etc. were; I only looked at a moderate number of the women's marks but except for the PV, the low-key other UW (Wisconsin) meet beat them in almost every case.
Trackshark has been gone for almost two years.

It is NOT the fastest time for 600 in an NCAA meet this year, and two others have run similar times on legal tracks. One runner from Texas A&M has already run 1:49 for a full 800. And the big guns have not yet competed in 600 or 800.
I'm not saying it is not a decent time, but he's going to have to do quite a bit better just to MAKE the NCAA finals against Cas Loxsom and Robby Andrews.
Look at Greer's form compared to the others in the race. It looks like he wasn't going all out.
Also He's got a great kick so I wouldn't count him out for the NCAA final. Don't think his kick can beat Andrews but I think Greer will be one of the best 800 meter runners this year.
If you look closely, you will see that Greer's time is actually slower than he ran in the same race last year. There can be differences, such as illness/injury state and the quality of the field.
Unless there are such other effects, Greer and Vin should be disappointed.
