If they weren't then 90% of all long distance runners wouldn't be exactly around your height, and we'd see the centers being the real speed demons in basketball.

My legs are long.
Most above average runners have above average leg length.
Proportions are important. I bet if you took Manzano's body height proportion to his lower leg length you would find he's not so disadvantaged.
Now if someone was 6 foot tall with Manzano sized legs, he would be massively disadvantaged.
I'll trade him my long, slow legs for awhile and see how long he can keep his career.
Where was he complaining?
small legs: faster turnover rate, smaller stride
long legs: slower turnover rate, larger stride
it really doesn't matter...
Faster turnover equals more lactic acid.
Incorrect.
Meh...tell that to Andrew Wheating, Pablo Solares, Asbel Kiprop.
Besides, I believe Leo is around 5'4'', and the average height of elite milers is somewhere in the 5'9'' range? that's still almost half a foot shorter than his comp.
I believe the main problem is that it's very easy to get pushed around in races.
Going by the stats for top 5000/10,000/marathon guys, Manzano's physical stats would appear to be ideal for those distances, but of course, with his speed (1.45/3.32)he does not need to move up.
Yes, the important thing is coordination, and having a short torso in comparison to legs is advantageous in running (in swimming it is the opposite!).
Manzano es muy bueno porque tiene huevos.....y no se rinde jamas! Vamos los chicanos!
Ghost in Saudi,
, apply today.
You are right... sort of. Over long distance, marathon, half, 10k and even 5k shorter height seems to be an advantage but in the 1500/800 they tend to be a little taller, 5'9-6'2 is usually the more common height, not 5'5, and according to the article Manzano is an 800/1500 guy. At least thats were his goals are.
