For Bald Guys: Was hair important to you?

Bumping because I would like to see some responses as well. I'm 22 and losing some hair, but it's not very noticeable yet. Are you thinning all over, or is it only in certain spots?

if it gets really bad and you have an \"island\" in the middle of your head...time to shave that shit and go for the bald look.

I've buzzed my hair without a clipper guard about once a week for about 5 years, but rarely shave it completely. It thinned a bit in the typical area during a particularly stressful period my mid 20's. I buzzed at first sign of any hair loss, although it seems to be the same since I started buzzing it.

I don't miss it and never think about having hair. My life would be no different with our without hair. My haircut does not affect my career, and it had no effect on my ability to meet women when I was single.

Having short/no hair is quite convenient. I've spent $40 on 2 hair clippers in 5 years. I won't grow my hair back now even though I think it would still look fine.

I would be embarrassed to get a hair transplant. I think you are better off buzzing your hair short, accepting reality and worrying about more important things.

I pretty much agree with the guy above me.

I started going bald quickly when I was 19'ish. It killed me then. I felt like I was totally getting cheated.

I'm 34 now and to be totally honest it doesn't bother me at all. Sure, I would take a full head of hair if I had the choice but being bald doesn't hold me back from anything. Just keep it short and don't worry about it. Once you're in your 30's you probably won't give a shit. You'll have other more important things like back and ass hair to worry about at that point!

... the only one of three bros. who was NOT blessed w/ thick hair. Even my dad had more hair when he was alive. Anyway, I've watched it go over the years. After having the bald spots on the back and on the top get bigger, my wife took a #2 blade to it. Looks and feels much better. Let the beard grow a bit to compensate. It's actually a convenient way to go as far as upkeep.

Nobody is answering the original question, which is, "what if you don't look good (i.e. like a space alien, or Alan Webb) bald?

I would look terrible bald, but I look like a passably attractive prisoner when I shave down with a #2 guard on the clipper. If I went bald, I feel I would have to get hair transplants.

Look on the bright side, at least you don't need to worry about contracting head lice.

I'm 50 - started losing my hair at age 20. I'm not totally bald, just major thin on top.

I will tell you this - hair on a man's head means nothing. It never prevented me from having long and short term girlfriends - and it seems the more hair I lost, the better looking girls were that showed interest in me...dead serious. Same with my career - nothing but upside since graduating college.

Of course, this all could be attributed to becoming a mature person as time went by, but losing hair had absolutely no negative effect - my life couldn't have been better thus far.

I use guard 1 on the clippers...never completely shave it, and I've never missed my hair and couldn't care less. Now, I might have cared if I started to lose it at 18, but it wasn't until I was in my late 20s, and I was already married and had more important things to think about than my damn hair. She doesn't care about my lack of hair, and neither do I. Tons of old fat unfit guys with a head full hair. Best to work on something that really matters as far as your health and fitness goes.

I started showing signs of balding at 17. 17! Didn't come to terms with it until a few years later, and now I don't mind.

Hair was important to me when I wanted to let it grow long and wild. But once the bald spot became obvious, I started to shave it short every couple couple months and never let the bald spot become too obvious. Actually, I prefer keeping it short. Doesn't get as greasy or messy. I don't have to worry about fixing it all up when I wake up in the morning. And it keeps shampoo/conditioner costs to a minimum. The balding has not seemed to repel women, but other factors are more important than how much hair you got on your head.

Also, at 23, I stopped getting carded. The beard also helped that.

Only con: I have to wear hats more often became my head doesn't retain as much heat. However, I have used this as an excuse to start buying nicer hats.

Also, I shave to 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch depending on whose clippers I use. I don't think I'll ever got completely bald. That's too much for me.

I started losing my hair at 17 too. Sucked, but oh well. 24 now, and my hairline has receded a good chunk but not too noticeable. I've kept my hair at a medium length, but recently cut it short. Ritz pulls off the short hair cut really well. When I got to college and saw more guys with thinning hair, I came to except it. Thing to note, super thin and bald are not a great combo.

I would avoid the transplant. They always seem obvious(like Webb), and what if you continue to lose your hair? You have some fluffy patch around your forehead and baldness on the top? Not to mention the ugly scar on the back of your head.

Confidence is the most important factor.

Lost most of my hair by 22. I miss it only for the sun protection it provided. When I had hair, it was a cross between a bird's nest and a wet poodle. Couldn't do anything with it. Of course, if I was a kid again today, I would have totally cool hair with the whole hipster messy hair thing. But I had to grow up in the blow-dry, Duran Duran 80s. Life is cruel in many ways.

Started losing in mid-20s. At mid-40s, not quite a cue-ball: got the "power ring" plus some front fuzz. Must high-n-tight weekly.

Do I miss the hair? Absolutely. I had, frankly, gorgeous blond locks. My face/skin is still that of a man 10-15 years younger (thanks Dad!)--think Ron Howard (minus the red hair & freckles), i.e., boyish, until the hat comes off.

But that's life. Not gonna worry, not gonna pharma, not gonna do surgery. My wife points out that I've already got the hottest woman around (true, actually) and she claims not to care.

(But I miss it nonetheless...)

I started going gray in my mid 20s and colored it for several years. Then my hair started getting thinner and I finally just took the clippers to it. Now I go over it without a guard on the clippers every few days. I won't say I "miss it" but I do get jealous of my 15-year-old when I see the same really thick hair I had when I was his age!

Still, if you go bald people don't notice or say things as much as you think since so many people do it. Many women seem to like it too. Plus, I think it's way better than trying to part, clip, mess with, combover or whatever with the hair a person has left and they 1) do a really bad job with it and 2) make it painfully obvious that they are trying too hard.

I seem to be on the other side of the fence on this one. I've always had thick hair, and no one in my family is bald or balding.

But a couple weeks ago my wife said it looks like the top of my head was thinning a bit. I'm 37.

It has me freaked out to be honest. I won't use any product to keep hair, or to get implants...doesn't mean I'll feel the same without a full head of hair.

There's always the comb-over option...that's AWESOME

Mine started to shake loose around 27. It bugged me at first, but it was one of those things that you just learn to accept and recognize that there's nothing you can do about it...just face reality. I sure as hell wasn't going to use Rogaine, or get a transplant, so I focused on keeping it short and tight, and making sure the parts of my body I can control were kept in order.

It's all about confidence and self-esteem. I know many guys who have flowing locks, and they're scared of their own shadow. Just because you don't have hair on your head doesn't mean you're never going to get some tail, or have a smokeshow girlfriend / wife.
