How will Kara be ready for Boston in April?

Yes, and when you read between the lines of that interview she is clearly not used to it, feeling exhausted I beleieve she stated.

The body needs time to adapt, especially after carrying and nurturing a new born, as opposed to getting run-down by taking on too much, too soon. Just saying, sounds like a recipe for distaster. She either pulls out, not feeling ready or the excitement gets the better of her and she bombs with a 2:35+ and is wrecked for 2011, nerver recovering in time for WC.

She's running a half on Sunday, which will reveal what kind of shape she's in. Most likely she'll be running alone, making the task that much harder. In my mind, a sub 1:12 would be proof that she's on her way to earning her spot in Boston.

Although i'm not sure on his posting name, i agree with the OP. Didn't Kara befriend Paula over the past few years, and didn't Paula warn her not to try to come back too quickly? I know it's sort of back seat driving here, but why not focus on a later outdoor track season that transitions into a fall marathon? Ramping up to 100mile weeks seems pretty extreme.

Anyone else find it crazy that Adam had ACL surgery 6 weeks ago? and is already doing 18 mile runs with Kara? How in the world can you do that? Or better yet, why? Seems like a very quick return to running after a pretty invasive surgery.

With all this said, i'm definitely a fan and wish the best for she and Adam.

I read or listened to an interview with her that might give a clue - she called herself a 'workhorse' and different than some/most of the elites around her.

I suspect that she and Alberto looked at her history, decided that what gets her into shape is racing, and that given her past, injury is unlikely.

So probably she feels that the best way to get to London in shape to fight for a podium is to start now with high intensity.

My memory is that last year she showed up to a lot of races - indoor miles, road races, etc - sounds like racing is what gets her in shape and motivated.

You make your money while you can. She'll probably get a decent appearance fee, and her performance doesn't really matter. If she does poorly, she tells her sponsor she rushed back after the baby. If she does well, she probably gets more money from her sponsor. No lose situation.

This. OP, by 'ready' do you mean ready to race or ready to cash a check?

No surprise you missed the point I was making. Salazar was referring to a key fundamental, which is "to be successful in the marathon, marathoners need a solid base of training, which Ritz did not have and Kara will not have.

Seems what's best for Kara here is her appearance fee and to help further promote marathon running in the US. Wheter she has a good base or not is secondary.

Kara is the bread winner of the family and only has a short window of time in the sport of athletics. Plus, it's not like Adam is earning anything these days

A fall marathon probably wouldn't be the best idea with the Trials in January.

So that is 5 races over the next 9 weeks. She then has 4 weeks until Boston.

Thank god someone is finally out there racing. All of the africans are out there laying it down every couple of weeks and then come back and win marathons. As long as she's not tapering and loosing training from the races but using them to enhance the training, this is great.

I think us marathoning and long distance (men's) has proven that the disappearing act between marathons works well for running slower than needed.

I'm guessing the OP is not a woman, but as said she has already been hitting 100s, while freaking nursing - hence the fatigue - and yes she had a baby recently, but elite women can train through much more of a pregnancy than many would assume - I'd wager she's pretty darn fit, and she will have no problem being ready in April providing she stays healthy.

Kara needs a qualifier prior to the trials.

Agreed. The "exhaustion" is a side effect of nursing, not an indicator of a lack of recovery or overtraining. My feeling is Kara has carried over a lot of base fitness, and if she's already running 100+ miles per week, she will be just fine at Boston.

I don't think the NYRR Half on March 20 is a good idea unless she intentionally runs it as a marathon pace workout (1:12-1:13). There is a difference between racing 5K and 10K while prepping for a marathon and racing a half marathon, even with four weeks to recover. Good luck to Kara. I'm predicting a 2:27

Goucher will never reach the starting line in Boston. Her race schedule is set up for excuses. She will blame it on the kid.
