Those numbers are truly insane and don't quite support the notion that many push around here that since the great high mileage revival and internet spreading of the "word" that USA has had a distance running revival. Now don't get me wrong, what Solinsky and Ritz and the like have done on the track is stunning and incredibly impressive. But I am beginning to think that those two and Hall and a few more are our very own freaks of nature. Looking at those marathon numbers, I just think it shows that we do not have ANY real depth in distance running. Maybe that will change, but since every letsrun reader has apparently been given the great word of Lydiard for the last decade, you'd think we'd have a COUPLE more sub 2:10 guys, right??
And what the hell happened to Japan? I though that they were the great proof that one didn't need superhuman running genes, and if one just put in the slow miles, bam, you'd have a 1/2 dozen 2:08 guys. ONE sub 2:10 performer?!?
Oh, and to those whom it might concern: Ethiopia had a "smattering" of top performers this year which included 36 sub 2:10 guys. Yes, Kenya had a quite a bit more (63), but at the very top of the list, ETH gave Kenya a run for its $:
SUB 2:07- 11 for KEN, and 8 for ETH (And that group of 8 DID NOT EVEN INCLUDE THE EMPEROR OR NY WINNER GEBREMARIAM)
The DEPTH Gap is not getting smaller, but is instead getting much, much wider.
