It's been a little over a month since the initial report of a bacterium that can purportedly survive by incorporating arsenate into it's DNA. Subsequent debate within the scientific community has essentially debunked the claims of the NASA authors. Here's a good article on the topic with many other useful links:
Today, I was reading an LRC thread about whether ghosts exist, and I saw one poster claim that "NASA has discovered a lifeform that thrives on Arsenic". This bothered me because it is not true whatsoever. Now, I'm around science all day every day, and I'm admittedly out of touch with what most people know about science news.
So, I was wondering whether the general population is aware that there probably isn't a bacteria that lives on arsenic. The media really sensationalized this story from the get go, and I think it would be a shame if no one knows what's really going on.
