I live in an extremely rural area and not a single neighbor of mine follows the leash law. The dogs on my road CONSTANTLY chase down runners/walkers/bikers and have torn numerous bikers right off their bikes. The worst part is the dog warden lives on my road and he owns 3 german shepherds that make it IMPOSSIBLE for me to run by his property. Even if I am on the other side of the road they will come after me. I've had 2 friends bitten by one of them. If I bring my dog with me they try to tear him to pieces but luckily he's faster than they are so he can at least out run them.
One day I was attacked by one of the dogs on my road and bitten for the first time. If a dog is truly running at you, it's almost impossible to tell if his tail is wagging. There's a difference between a dog galloping up to you and a dog just headed straight for you in a dash. If he looks like a freaking lion chasin down a gazelle, chances are he doesn't want to play. This dog didn't even bark or growl, he just came flying out of no where and took a chunk out of my thigh. My leg swelled up so quickly from the bite that I couldn't walk home, not to mention I was bleeding all over the F*ing place.
The only thing that has usually w orked for me is if i stop and turn and face the dog and yell in a deep voice. Sometimes I'll even stomp my feet. But as soon as I turn to run they come chasing. In this case I never saw the dog coming and was just running with my back turned.
