New NFL format

New overtime rules:

Regular season - coin toss to see who gets the ball first.

Each team gets one possession.

Team scoring the most points wins or the game ends in a tie.

Post-season - coin toss to see who gets the ball first.

Each team gets an equal amount of possessions until one team is ahead after any "inning" and that team wins.

Teams must kick on fourth down. That eliminates the second team from having an advantage of knowing whether they have to go for it on fourth down.

If the second team is down by a touchdown and does not convert on third down - game over. If they are down by three, they must attempt a field goal from wherever they are on the field.

At least they get a chance to come back after getting scored on unlike the former sudden death rule.

or they could just play a 15 minute overtime quarter. If the score is still tied once the clock hits 0:00 in the overtime period, then they play until a team scores.

15 minutes plus first score is OK but they want to keep OT short if possible. Maybe go 8 minutes.

My first post was a response to Seattle not only making the playoffs but hosting a game. In my scenario the Saints would have won the West and the Giants or Bucs would have gotten in over Seattle.

The new playoff OT rule says that if the first team with the ball scores a touchdown, they win. If they score a field goal, the second team can tie or win on their possession and then it is sudden death after that.

Still an advantage to the first team because the second team doesn't get a chance to respond to a touchdown and the first will always have a chance at getting more possessions to score.
