If i want to run 10 miles with a bunch of guys who are running in a marathon, is it wrong to just jump in? Would you have me the pay the fee even though i am not starting or finishing? I feel that i should be able to yet i also feel guity about it.

go for it. if i was another marathoner actually in the race i wouldnt care and might even enjoy your company. just be alert and stay out of people's way (ie aid stations)
It depends on the race. When my wife ran Kiawah, I ran for about 8 miles with her. Granted, we have a house there and I was just doing my regular route, but I didn't take any water or anything.
I wouldn't do it at Boston though, or NYC or something like that.
As long as you don't take any of the calories supplied by the race organizers, you should be fine.
I use to do it all the time. I used the first 10-15 as a trial effort. My fastest 10 miler came as part of a half marathon.
I stayed away from the aid stations and kept a low profile. I tried not to screw up the marathoners race efforts.
Of course it probably better to pay and then just drop put.
So then paying for a race is simply to allow you to get an official clocked time and/or use aid stations?
Btw, someone told me that the aid station supplies are mostly sponsored by the manufacturers so you are not technically stealingnfrom the marathon organizers. Is this true?
It's very race dependent. Some are too large to afford having extra bodies at the start, although you could jump in in after a few miles or towards the later stages.
Some races are vigilant about keeping out runners without bibs.
Aid station supplies are another widely variable expense. Sometimes fully sponsored, sometimes partially and sometimes not at all.
Have fun
Gotta Register then let your bib number dangle over your nutsack. Cover it with a longsleeve tee long enough to fall and cover the bib number. Dress casually at the start as though youre not really racing. After the gun goes off wait until 4mins pass. Walk casually across starting line Slip off the course. Strip outfit and Reenter race at mile 23. Jog it in. Keep careful track of time and Make sure not to cross finish too soon or you might get caught for an unrealistic net time.
I always encourage people to hop in races and run them, whether they've entered or not.
After all, there would be no races without runners!
