I'm from Michigan and have been looking for races anywhere from 30 miles to 150 miles to run. My friend and I want to begin training for one and want to start setting on a focus race to shoot for. Any suggestions?

The Superior Sawtooth 100 is a good one. Very challenging, can be cold/cool, almost all singletrack.
My first ultramarathon was Howl at the Moon 8 hour race in Danville, Il. Pretty nice three mile loop to run, great organization, and the added bonus of not a lot of pressure makes for a nice first one. I went 48 miles in the 8 hours and felt like a I learned a lot going into my second one which will be this spring.
Ice Age 50, the 30th annual of which will be held May 14. I'm seriously considering the 50 miler as my first. I've only heard and read rave reviews.

ice age 50 mile in le grange, WI is an amazing course and race
Take a look at the Lynchburg Ultra Series

David Horton puts on top-notch races at varying levels of difficulty. You have everything from the Holiday Lake 50k, which is great for first timers because they pretty much baby you(aid stations about every 5 miles), to the Grindstone 100 miler. Also take a look at the West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners
. I would love to run the West Virginia Trilogy if it didn't interfere with cross.
The Ice Age 50 is a nice race. However, if you're looking for a race with better scenery, there are better options. I'm not ragging on the IA50, but there are some other races with stunning scenery. Just my humble opinion.
Big Bear 12 Hour Trail Run. July 16th. 6.5 mile single track loops. Low price. Free Camping. www.bigbearwv.com
What distance would you advise us to start out at? I've always been a bit of a mileage hog. When my base period gets going, I can usually get up to around 100-120. My friend, however, doesn't run more than 30 miles a week but bikes like a mad man. He plans on switching to focus on running only to train for this (of course). He's actually very talented and probably wouldn't have a problem switching back to running (he ran in college with me).
Are there any November 50 milers near the midwest?

I appreciate your help, but I'm looking for not only a 50 miler or 100k, but one that's worthwhile and has a larger turnout.
Dude, check out the ultra page and click on the race websites link. You can then see past results and see WHO and how many people entered the race. Do people have to hold your hand and guide u on everything?
Some of the races might even give you a hour early start because you seem to have Down Syndrome.
Can you recommend one in particular (50 mile)?

So does that mean you have none to recommend or are you still looking over the website for me?

Why did you steal my handle just to ask the same question again?
