Fishing experts, I gotta know what fish this is. Any help would be great, I'm pretty sure it's a specific type and I need more than the general species.

keep fishing
Asian Carp
Very tasty.
Abundant in the Great Lakes.
Happy fishing.
Abe Vigoda!
Looks like Kingfish to me.
I'm not a fishing expert that's no Asian Carp, they have short blunt heads and little eyes low in the head. Your fish has a long snout and big eyes. Maybe Walleye Pike but that's just a guess.
Snakehead. Invasive species.
Yup- snakehead. Tell your local DNR if you really caught it, they're trying hard to control them (or should be)
Nope, not a snakehead.
The only snakehead species seen so far in the US is Northern Snakehead:

Note eyes very far forward in head so that the gape of the mouth is behind the eye. Compare with the OP's fish. Not a match.
Do you have a picture of the whole fish?
Salt or freshwater?
Nope only this pic. And not sure on salt or freshwater. Probably fresh but not 100%
Bowfin?

Bowfin?
Second this, although its snout does seem a little long. It's also sometimes referred to as the dogfish.
Nope. A bowfin has some small nose "feelers". Technically speaking.
Snook?
Where (what region and specific body of water) was it caught? This would help immensely in identification. I bet local fishermen could identify it easily.
If you believe it is some sort of non-native invasive species then you should contact your state's DNR.
Would be interested in seeing tooth structure. If sharp pointed teeth it could be a relative of the pickerel.
Do you, by any chance, have a picture of this fishes parents? Much can be discerned about the fish population through close analysis of the family tree. Is this fish indigenous to the United States? OR is this an immigrant fish? We need more information before we can give an exact ruling.
One more item, do you have a DNA fingerprint of said fish? This can also be useful.

Nobody with access to any of that information is willing to make it public. There are, however, plenty of copies of forged or unofficial photos all over the internet.
And shame on you for asking, you ... you ... mackerelist! You lack standing.
Interesting background to your question. You don't know whether it was a fresh or saltwater fish. Where did you find the picture.
Anyway it is a squawfish.
