They don't have to take an oath either. You don't have to take an oath to testify in court either (at least Federal court, I'm not sure about the several states).

There was one president who did not "swear" during his oath of office. Millard Fillmore "solemly affirmed to uphold the constitution, etc." I think he still used a bible, though.
Because they would be pilloried by Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh if they didn't.
They can choose other books. I would suggest fictional texts: Mein Kampf, Bible, Koran, Sutras, Torah, Harry Potter, Tale of Genji (1st novel in histrory). Or non-fiction: Physicians Desk Reference, The C Programming Language (K&R), Guidebook for United States Marines, or your choice. It's a free country afterall.
