There are studies showing you are something like 57% more likely to be overweight if you have one overweight close friend. I can't remember but something like maybe 70+% more likely to be overweight if you have 2 or more overweight friends. I have recently reconnected with 3 very overweight friends who used to be close to me in high school. They have much different habits than me and it's becoming an issue in our friendships. They say things like "who cares if you gain a little weight?" And they don't get enough sleep, don't eat healthy (claiming they only eat bad foods at get togethers, not all the time, nevermind that they weigh 80+ pounds more than they are supposed to). So I am just wondering: do any of you have overweight friends and have you been able to keep them from basically infecting your brain/life with bad habits? I've become pretty close to these people over the last 1.5 years, but thinking they are pulling me away from healthier living and maybe considering ending the friendships over the issue. These are nice people with this one flaw. Latest issue was one of them had the flu and didn't warn me, showed up at event, then I came down with the flu, now been sick for 2 weeks and of course no training, which they don't understand is a problem. Any thoughts? Can you have these friends and still maintain your commitment to fitness? Or should runners/fit people shun overweight/obese people??
