He lost his Super Bowl MVP wide receiver in the off season, he lost his star QB for the first 4 games, he lost practically his entire offensive line due to injury, he had the NFL refs unfairly targeting his star linebacker, but yet he still won the AFC North with a 12-4 record and a 1st round bye. I would imagine that knowingly harboring a rapist for over a year didn't help.
Regular season Belechick had a better year. Playoffs don't matter for coach of the year. I'm not a Patriots fan, just stating an unbaised opinion. You're letting your fandom get in the way of reasonable analysis.
Because it's for the coach who did the best job, just one. It's not for everyone who did something positive.
Consider these eight coaches:
Bill Bellichik
Mike Smith
Lovie Smith
Raheem Morris
Steve Spagnuolo
Todd Haley
Jim Caldwell
Mike Tomlin
I think you can make a good argument that Tomlin belongs on this list, which is only 8 NFL head coaches, and excludes the other 24 coaches.
Number one? No way, unless you make such decisions by not considering anyone else's accomplishments.
He's got a good team playing well. 12 coaches got their teams into the playoffs. Many of those teams have far less talent than the Steelers.
Shouldn't "coach of the year" go to a coach that got their team into the playoffs when they were expected to be a bad team? Coaching a team with less talent is a lot harder than coaching a team with talent. Same with running. Turning mediocre teams into good teams can only be done with good coaching.

Yes, Tomlin has done an excellent job this year, but it looks better than what it is because they (he) underachieved last year. After a championship two years ago, last year was non-playoffs and losing to Brows & Raiders among other lowly teams. This year "should" have been good. Patching the line etc. were good moves, but not "coach of the year" type stuff considering the talent.
In the NFL coaches and QBs are dime a dozen. PEDs rule the NFL !

NO ONE thought the Pats would be 14-2, no one. Experts had them as a playoff bubble team at best, the only reason people like you give the argument you do is because they are the Patriots and people assume they are loaded with talent.

He got handed a Super Bowl team, if you will, and should be able to in the division playing Cincinatti and Cleveland twice every year.

Not his fault, but the NFL would never give anything to the Steelers this year. The NFL could not be more self-conscious about bad PR. Holmes and Big Ben ruined it for him.

Brady is a flawless QB. The WR on my son's Pop Warner would have 1,000 yds if Brady was throwing to him. How would Belichick do without Brady? Then we would all see how great his coaching abilities are.
