Medial Plica Surgery

I've had the surgery, although I went into the surgery thinking I was getting part of my medial meniscus shaved off. Instead the doctors found my meniscus was fine, and opted to shave off parts of my "rough" plica. Imagine my confusion when they explained this to me. But alas, I'm veering off your question.

I had the plica surgery in the winter of 2009. I was finally able to run 20-30mpw that summer. The plica pain never really went away to this day. I've grown accustomed to it and have adjusted. I wouldn't have gotten the surgery if I knew that it did pretty much absolutely nothing. Now I'm running roughly 60mpw with the occasional day off every 2-3 weeks.

My experience has been relatively negative, but I feel that you can run through it and not have it really bother you. Just take it slow when building back the mileage. Make sure to take days off just in case too.

I too underwent arthroscopic knee surgery for a partial removal of a torn medial meniscus in Nov 2008. The surgeon did a partial removal and also removed inflamed plica. He also found I had a Grade 2 MCL tear which nothing could be done surgically to fix. I was told I could start running at 8 weeks, but expect 3-6 months before I could push it. It was three months before I could run. By the summer of 2009 I was able to start speed work carefully, but it was the fall before I could pound any workouts. Unfortunately I had some issues with my gait, compensating for the discomfort, etc. so it took a bit longer than normal. Still the knee is really never been the same. On a good day I notice the knee is different. On a bad day I have soreness (especially in cold weather) and have to pay close attention to not over do it. Before the injury 50MPW was taking a break, now 50MPW is a peak.

I had plica removed several years ago and was able to completely recover and run faster than before the surgery. Attempting to run 11 days after the surgery seems a bit aggressive in my mind. My doc told me to wait at least 30 days after the surgery to run. Otherwise, it could cause further damage. When I first started running after the surgery, I also experience pain that was similar to the pain that I felt before the surgery, but it eventually went away. My knee would also swell up and be painful for several days when I first started back running after the surgery, but that also went away after a few weeks.
