Oregon's girls' high school records are dominated by performances from the late 70s and early 80s - the first decade of Title IX. There have been great performances since but what accounts for the quick start by these women, locally, and by runners like Mary Decker nationally?
I'm awed by it. I would think that participation rates would have been low to start, that gender bias would still be a limiting factor and that lack of experience would have provided a much slower start. But the women of the first decade crushed compared to the generation that followed.
Below is a list of Oregon's top-10 in the 800 and 1500. No one even appears on both lists which increases the domination of that 1978-1981 group.
