Obviously there's got to be a point when you're wasting time but I think this point varies. I know some guys who get no benefit from going over 10 miles while I like to go as far as 20. Just make sure that when you're out there running you know the purpose of what you're doing. Don't just go out on some trail and lollygag around for 2 hours.
I did a 20km long run every week for about 6 weeks leading up to my goal 10km race, and it seemed to work for me as I PRd easily. I'm slow though, 6 min mile type of guy.
