My kids know who German, Ritz, Webb and Hasay are, but really no other runners.

I'm 16, so I'll do the reverse. My Dad knows Verzbicas, Solinsky, Webb, and Driggs from Illinois. I live and run in Illinois, so that's how he knows LV and Driggs. Other than that, I've shown him some good races on youtube of Solinsky (10k), Webb (HS Mile), and Gebreselassie (5k WR). He has a great appreciation for what they/we do.
My son knows basically everyone, he knows even more than me and watches a lot of races on youtube. But has only just got into it after he ran track last season and he has 8 or 9 books about running History and training. I asked for Healthy intelligent training for Christmas.
I don't have kids but my nephew knows a few athletes due to the fact he stays the summer and is avid viewer of the major champs.
He is not sharp on the endurance athletes though. Sprinters he knows a few. Always makes me laugh when the british sprinter Laura Turner pops up on tv. He says "Laura Turner she never wins." It has turned into a running joke. Anyway, Major respect to her though!
My son can name a few. He likes to flip through TFN when it shows up. He knows more sprinters than distance runners even though he runs only XC. He can name a ton of skiers though.
My 16yo son trains with his club team at UCLA and has a t-shirt with signatures from the past year or so of Johnny Gray, Meb Keflezighi, Shawn Crawford, Maurice Greene, Allen Johnson, Felix Sanchez, Allyson Felix, Lashida Demus, Carmelita Jeter, Lionel Larry, Eunice Barber, Natahsa Hastings, just to name off the top of my head the Oly/WC Medalists who live locally around here.

This book really helped me learn good training fundamentals. Hope it helps you too.
My 9 you son knows who Usain Bolt is. I had a poster of Amy Rudolph and Haile Geb in his room and my 7yo daughters room the last few years (Amy signed it after going to a running camp in CT I used to help organize)
My daughter knows all the names and info about the top runners (especially the women), and has meet a decent number of them (thanks NYRR).
Running and Pro Football are really the only sports she follows.
