Hi there looking for information on any coaching clinics/workshops for distance running.
I guess it depends on what part of the country--assuming you're in the U.S--you live in & how far you're willing to travel.
Have you tried the ever faithful google search?
Check USATF and RRCA.
The USOC puts on an altitude training conference every other year. Next one is October 2011. Lots of running coaches and professionals come, plus from other sports.
Distance Summit at Charlette< NC next weekend. Good line up of coaches.
Mass. puts on a good one the 3rd weekend in March. Check out Mass Track Coaches Association web site for more information.
The Ohio coaches association puts on one of the largest track clinics every year the last weekend in January. There are often 1600+ coaches in attendance for the Th-Sa conference. Recently the clinic has broken down into 4 major groups: distance, sprints, throws, & middle school. It's not purely those groups, but you get the idea.
The quality varies from outstanding to mind numbing. You would like to think you can tell by the names of the speakers how good it's going to be, but there's nothing worse than having a "big name" come in and go through the motions. The best speaker I can remember was a high school coach from Georgia. He had won multiple state championships and had an approach that could motivate and instruct athletes at every level on a high school team. His expertise was coaching, not physiology. The science I can pick up from a book, a research journal, or the internet. The art of coaching is what I really enjoy picking up at clinics.
Mt Sac has a clinic on January 22nd for all coaches. They usually bring in a coaching staff from one of the prominent university's. I believe the coaching staff from Arizona State gave the clinic last year. I think the USC or UCLA staff will be doing it this year.
Here is a clinic in the Southern California area. It looks like the USC coaching staff will give it. You should get good info on sprints, throws and middle distance. And not so much in the area of jumps, and long distance.
When: Saturday, January 22, 8:00 – 4:30
Where: Mt. SAC
What: Advanced Coaches Clinic: Field sessions, classroom discussions for high school coaches
This course is designed primarily for high school coaches, but is opened to all interested coaches. The clinic is free. You must register online (see below).
Advanced Level Clinic: Six hours of clinic instruction that includes a minimum of four hours of Advanced Level education in all track and field event areas presented by the finest elite, college and high school coaches in the nation, along with several more in depth sessions focusing specifically on such topics as mental preparation, core conditioning, injury prevention, Olympic lifting, relay success, nutrition and supplements, etc.
All participants will receive a free CD copy of the 456-page LA84 Foundation Track and Field Coaching Manual.

Sorry, not at Mt. Sac but at Paramount High School in Downey
I believe the clinic at Paramount HS in early January is basic high school coaching. The clinic at Mt. Sac on January 22nd is for advanced high school coaches. The Mt. Sac clinic can get very technical and you really have to know your stuff in order to follow it.
I am going to the Mt. Sac clinic because I have coached for 12 years and I am curious to see how they train their 800 and 1500 meter runners. The last few years have brought us the Arizona State and UCLA staffs doing the Mt. Sac clinic. I enjoyed the ASU presentation, and I thought the UCLA clinic was only good in the throws area. But the good thing is we get to see different styles of coaching whether we like them or not.
Hey, can someone let me know when they announce the speakers for the Mt. Sac track and field clinic on January 22nd. Im thinking about driving up for the clinic but i want to know who is speaking for the distances.
Don't they have some sort of clinic or workshop during the US Cross Country Trials weekend
