I had flu like symptoms Monday and Tuesday of last week, and then this was followed by intense coughing. I have been coughing since (almost a week), and the coughs are pretty intense and usually don't produce anything, though sometimes I can get up some green mucusy stuff. Last night I couldn't sleep because I could not stop coughing. I would cough literally every 30 seconds or less, and the coughing itself would last at least 10 seconds. Cough drops and cough medicine don't help much.
Anyone had anything similar? I'm thinking possibly whooping cough, but I don't know. I'm sure I had the vaccine when I was young, but my friend got whooping cough a few years ago. Any help?
Seeing a doctor is the best advice, but unless you hear the "whoop" it's likely not whooping cough. When I get sick, the end of it is often followed up with coughing. Often you may have fluid in your sinuses or ears that drain a little when you lie down to go to sleep, and this causes the irritation and the coughing. It will LIKELY go away in a couple weeks. If a fever develops, then run to the doctor (good to go anyway as a cough could be from many things). You may get some relief by taking NyQil COUGH before bed. You may not get any coughing relief, but the Doxylamine succinate that is in it as an anti-histamine is also used in sleeping pills and it is why the stuff makes you drowsy; it will help you sleep. If you want a bigger dose of Doxylamine succinate, look for sleeping pills with that as the main ingredient (Kroger sells their own brand with that as the main ingredient).
