I've been doing ~90mpw for about two months now with some steady runs in there but not any real workouts. Though running 14 miles a day doesn't seem at all strenuous, I feel slow as hell and even my old 5k PR pace feels pretty damn fast. I'm looking to race a 3k in three weeks, and though I'm not counting on a PR or anything, I'd like to be at least a little ready for it. How do I make the transition? I was thinking do maybe one short tempo and one long interval session a week, both including plenty of strides before and after the workout while maintaining a long run of 16 miles or so. Does this seem good? I've been out of the loop so to speak for a while and have kind of forgotten what it's like to train competitively for the track.
I'm in my mid 20s if that helps. Had injuries and illness all last year and haven't run a track race in 3 years.
