I don't know. Cash's version of the song is more knowing and less self-indulgent than Reznor's.
My vote would be for Cat's in the Cradle.
Keep me In Your Heart For A While - Warren Zevon
Christmas Card From A Hooker in Minneapolis - Tom Waits
Im So Lonesome I Could Cry - Hank Williams
I had mad word and cats in the cradle before looking at any posts. Just something about the childhood imagery that gets you everytime.
I would add Peter Gabriel's Washing of the Water (great for salting your wounds during a breakup) and Don't Give Up (same for losing a job)
For me, the saddest song has to be Pretty Boy Swag by Soulja Boy. The fact that that song is popular and people genuinely enjoy it is very sad to me.
Enola Gay by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.
Dry your Eyes - The Streets
the version with Chris Martin is the best
Jesus and Mary Chain's "Nine Million Rainy Days"
Off the Lou Reed's ablum Berlin

The Bed
Elliott Smith's "True Love" and "Fond Farewell."
Many Nirvana songs.
A few Hole songs.
Gotta go with Distance Guy on this one - "Cat's in the Cradle," hands down.
"End of the Rainbow" by Richard Thompson is pretty much the most pessimistic.
"It's Over" by Roy Orbison, in terms of romance, is the most negative.
Miserable at Best - Mayday Parade
Tearjerker - Korn
