I'm planning to drive to New Mexico to train at high altitude for the winter. I've trained at high altitude several times before (not New Mexico). I can't decide whether to go to Albuquerque or Santa Fe. I'm leaning towards Albuquerque because it's closer to an airport, cheaper, slightly warmer, and I'm somewhat familiar with what it's like (stayed there one time for a few days). I'd also prefer to live in a valley and run mostly flat every day/twice a day, and then have the option of driving to foothills 1-2x week. From what I can tell searching old threads, Santa Fe sounds hilly, but the advantage is the higher altitude. I've also heard of others living in Santa Fe and driving to Albuquerque for ~long runs. I know people in both places, but would prefer to live alone at an 'extended stay' (which I've scoped out, but I'm open to other suggestions on where to stay). Safety is a concern too, both living and running.
So which is better for winter training? Is Albuquerque high enough? Where to train in both places? Suggestions on where to stay, ~able to run from the door twice a day with limited driving needed? I'm also open to suggestions on other places to live/train, but since I'm driving from the East I'd prefer going to New Mexico or Colorado. Thanks.
