I think "Raspberry Beret" is my favorite Prince song.
Prince is a musical genius and a phenomenal guitar player. One of the all-time greats. As a songwriter however he has written some of the all-time dumbest lyrics.
If you are over 40 his Super Bowl half-time show reminded you how great he was in the '80s. Unfortuneately for the younger generation he is sort of a joke because of his media image and wierdness. When I think of Prince I think of the great music: Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, and the best one-Sign of the Times. These young kids laugh and probably never listened to any of that music.
Here is Prince performing some acoustic solo versions of some songs on mtv from 2004

No doubt. The bar featured in that movie was a great place, and yes he used to play there. That was before Hennepin Ave got all gentrified.
Having just moved out of Minneapolis when that movie was made it was cool to see a reference to Lake Minnetonka, and yes, in the movie that wasn't Lake Minnetonka.
Prince was indeed cool (then). He got pretty weird later.
I think he IS cool. Not was cool.
One reason Prince doesn't get the respect he deserves is he was lumped in with Michael Jackson as "weird". He's nothing like Michael Jackson. Prince IS a little eccentric, MJ turned into a circus freak. Prince may be the most talented individual in the history of rock. He wrote great songs, can play every instrument, and crush a few of them (electric guitar comes to mind), is a great producer, and can entertain a crowd, all this packed into a 5'2" frame:) Honestly, who is better than Prince?

You say eccentric, I saw weird. Either way he's a fruit.
