Male, senior, highschool. Last track season I ran a 2:06 800m wihout much training at all. I ussually just ran a couple of workouts with my friend who ran the 3200m 11:14 and 1600m 5:06.
This year I hope to break 2:00. My xc pr was 18:03 compared to last years 19:11, I think mainly because iI ran a good summer base with my friend. I have been doing a ton of lunges, flutter kicks, pushups etc. lately.. should i cut this out or keep doing it.. etc???
drop the flutter kicks, add single leg squats and step ups, work the core with standing exercises not in the prone or supine position, read everything you can by Vern Gambetta
What do your coach think you should do?
^^ my coach doesn't care about distance guys. I heard him talking crap about all of us once the work out he does for us is like 30 minute jogs every day in season. Then he gets mad at us for training on our own cause his workouts do work

Instead of complaining about your coach you might want to stop skipping English class. Your grammar is atrocious.
Honestly, you need to quit running immediately and focus on school.
If I didn't know better, I'd think Galen Rupp was a 16 year old drop-out. But he can run a hell of a lot faster than I can, so I don't bring it up. Maybe you should focus less on his typing and more on his question. And no, I'm not the op. I just think this shit is gettng a little old.

This is an outstanding post! Actually, I have a 99 in dual credit English class. I really just do not care much about how I sound on here. Nevertheless, congratulations to that guy, he can point simple typos! He is on his way to success one smartelic remark at a time! That must be why he started running. If it was not for running his nerdy a** could not run away from the other kids that could not give a rats a** about grammer when it does not count.
Maybe someone will come along with a useful post.
BY the way, my coach perscribed not ever running more than four miles. He said workout upper body and do a plyometric workmout he gave me. Yes, he was a sprinter in high school, placed pretty well nationally. But, this sounds pretty much the opposite of what most distance guys do today.
He just wants you doing low mileage so he can stick you in the 4x400 some day. A distance coach would have you doing more mileage in the hopes of sticking you in the 1600 or 3200 some day.
The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Most decent college 800m runners are probably doing close to 40 mpw.
If he is applying this 4 mile rule to every distance runner in the program, I'd say that it's not worth it. Find a track club.

I mix some of his sprint workouts with my friends distance workouts.. I just need help with the plyos and cross training aspect.
ok first, find a hill. do hill sprints and bounding up it. this will help you improve your power mechanics vital for running a good 800m. i don't feel like going in deep detail but if you must know more of what im speaking on read an arthur lydiard book and esp the part about hill work. this is great plyometic stuff. also, lunges, box jumps, and single leg jumps for height will help.

Oh my bad. I didn't mean to spell like that. I just wanted to get preached at. Let me rephrase the question to suit your needs, since that's what I'm here for, to suit YOUR needs.
My coach does not care about distance guys. He treats every sine event like it's the 100 meter dash. His most intense workout is doing 100 meter sprints all out. Then he will make us run 30 minutes at the most for our "aerobic work". He yells at us( distance guys) for training on our own, since his workouts don't do anything.
Lunges are great. They are the same as single leg squats. 800m runners need lots of pre-season mileage, hills are great as a pre-season workout, then you need to get some speed on the track. But don't forget about maintaining your cardio during the season.
