Been suffering for years. It comes and goes. I've tried everything short of surgery - which I do NOT want - and the supposedly magical Strasburg Sock.
Anyone have any experience with it? Does it work? Does it make sleeping awkward?

I bought one this summer and tried it. I couldn't sleep with it at all. I never made it a full night with the sock on. I would wear it sitting around the house, sitting in the car on long road trips, however. I just couldn't sleep with it.
I had the sock but did not like it as well the night splint. Yeah, it's a nuisance to wear at night but in the long run, it is definitely worth it. Like the other poster, I usually end up waking up in the middle of the night to take it off. If you can wear it at least for few hours at night or during the day, its better than nothing.
Good luck.
I used a night splint, which is similar, I think. It made a huge difference for me. I switched feet each night. Ended up using it for a year or so, since I'd messed my feet up pretty badly. It took some time to get used to, for me and my wife, who wasn't a big fan of having to share a bed with it.
cannot sleep with it for the life of me, eventually stopped in belief that the sleep i was losing was hurting me more than not wearing the sock itself
Yes, it helps. Like magic actually. I've been sleeping (heavily actually) with it on for months.
The key is to make sure the tension is not too tight. Just pull it so that it is just putting your foot in a nuetral position. If you try to pull your foot in dorsiflx position, you will not sleep or you will tear it off while sleeping. I think people think that if they can't even feel their foot being pulled up, it's not doing anything, but it's not true. We usually sleep with our feet plantarflexed, which is not going to help your calves or plantar if it's bothering you. Just pull it to a loose tension if that's all you can handle and sleep like that. It will help you. I also use it with a tighter tension when I am reading or watching a movie.
I hate saying this, b/c I think the product is great, but if you want to test out the thing without dropping $40, you can make one fairly easily.
I made one and it worked very well. I spent just over $5 on the materials, and it probably took me 10 minutes total (I have a sewing machine).
Long Tube Sock, Stretchy Elastic Band, Thick Ribbon. I bought all of this at a craft store for under $5 (as stated above.)
Sew Elastic band around top of tube sock so that it is tight on your calf. Above muscle, under knee. Not too tight that it restricts blood flow, but tighter than the sock would be normally. It is best if you can use a sock that is long enough to put the elastic band outside of the sock (covering sock material) instead of above it, so the elastic does not touch your skin.
Attach thick ribbon to the toe of the sock and then to the top of the elastic in the desired tension. If you wanted, you could sew on some loops to make it adjustable. Those loops would probably be another 30 cents at the store.
I prefer mine to be looser, like the poster above, so that it does not feel too unnatural. As long as I do not let my foot fall to toe-point position, I am fine.
Maybe I will make a bunch of these and sell them on ETSY whilst trying to avoid lawsuits from Mr Strassburg..
