I'm a college assistant coach - d3 distance assistant - with a thing for a former runner on the team. I never coached her, she was an athlete the year before I got there, but is in grad school now. We're two years or so apart in age. How unethical/awkward is it for me to ask her out?
I think some current members on the team who knew her when she was an undergraduate athlete might look at you differently as a coach/leader and some might be displeased. But there's no reason the current roster needs to know about your personal life. From a purely professional view I don't see how anyone on the coaching staff would have a problem seeing as there's no conflict of interest in the present time.
Displeased at what? Doing what they couldnt do?

it might seem silly, but you should check university policy on staff dating students. the policy can vary widely. Some are okay as long as there is no direct supervision/teaching. Policies may differ for faculty and staff.

If she's interested, go for it. Say something like "hey nice to see you around, let's go have a coffee..."

This probably happens more often than you think. If she is attractive and you share similar interests why would she be off limits if she is no longer an athlete.
I was in a similar situation. Things were awkward at first, but if you are mature about it, I don't see how this would be an issue.
If this girl were still on the team or you were still her coach I would remind you of the old saying " don't mix business with pleasure."
Go for it! It will only get more awkward as you get older and keep working the most current crop of prior athletes.
How is this an "interesting take"? You are simply asking a question based on a set of facts. There is no "take" (i.e. opinion, position, analysis) of any kind.
My college coach was married to one of his former athletes.
On of my assistant high school coaches is married to one of his former athletes from when he was head coach at a college. He is now an assistant coach at a high school for that very reason. Be careful and know the school's policy.
