Is UConn coach right?

he is a bore. really, who cares?

I think he hits the nail pretty much on the head. The vast network of sports reporters, sports commentators, etc are mostly (Although not all) men. There are already some who are discounting UCONN's streak as being less impressive than UCLA's (queue Chris Berman). I do not typically like the UCONN coach's caustic persona, but in this instance it is justified.

Men's basketball talent pool = olympic diving pool

Women's basketball talent pool = kiddy pool

UConn is just the smart program and coach that decided to spend the day at the kiddy pool picking all the best women.

Amazing feet breaking that record and everything, but they just don't have much competition... It's easy to win when you have all the best players.

I was very young when UCLA had its streak so I can only speak to UCONN's streak. 88 wins in a row is very impressive regardless of the competition that UCONN has had. That being said, I've often thought that women's basketball talent is just not as deep as the men's game today. UCONN really hasn't even been tested that much over this span. The first four rounds of the NCAA Tournament last year they won: 95-39, 90-36, 74-36, 90-50. I don't know whether the same existed 35-40 years ago when UCLA had its streak or not.

The media has generated the hype on this streak to sell the streak and get viewers. I think Coach Geno has overstepped on this one. Heckuva streak however.

Auriemma is scum. He convinced one elite recruit and her mother that a prominent coach at another top school (which she was leaning towards) was a lesbian. It was a complete lie. I know recruiting battles can get ugly, but that's setting a new low standard for scum-sucking.

in undergrad we(me and 4 friends) played the girls varsity when they were a top 10-15 team and went to the elite 8 and we destroyed them. the 5 of us were good. all of us could have played d3 if we wanted. a really good high school boys team would beat most if not all the top women's teams. and i'm not talking about a state all star team of boys. i'm talking a good, solid high school team. the talent level of the girls is nowhere near the guys. just the facts. the ucla teams were stacked, they only played 4 games in the tourney, etc, but that's tough to do. just as 88 in a row for uconn is tough.

Um, comparing a women's college team to guys is like comparing a guy's college team to an NBA team. It's apples and oranges.

That said, the talent pool in women's college bb is less than in men's college bb. The disparity between the best women's teams (not just UConn, but Stanford, Baylor, Tennessee, Duke) to the average and lesser teams is an enormous gulf.

He is probably a bit right; however, I get tired of the screams of racism and sexism every time a minority or a woman is criticized.

He should be happy anyone is paying attention at all.

I do not want the record broken because I grew up loving UCLA basketball.

Winning 88 straight is remarkable.

There are times when a women's sport can be compared to a men's sport. Take hitting a baseball/softball; it's all about reaction time, and when you compare time-to-plate in softball to baseball it's comparable. If a college softball player was approaching Joe D's 56 consecutve hit streak, I would truly be impressed ... maybe more so considering that softball is so dictated by pitching.

But comparing these two records is hollow ... there is no way what the UCONN women have done should be compared to UCLA. All you need to do is look at the scores of those 88 games to come to the conclusion the that number of games that UCONN actually needed to use their starters to win was incredibly small. The depth of women's basketball in no way compares to the depth of men's hoops. If you are trying to convince yourself otherwise you have an agenda.
