They have become seperate new words. Instead of the simple "in danger" we use the more poetic "harm's way" almost personifying harm. Instead of being responsible and thorough we do "due diligence"
They seem odd to me for some reason.

George Bush invented the term harm's way because it was the best way to get across to the American people what our soldiers were doing to protect us.
Due diligence was probably created by some bureaucratic pencil pusher who was coming up with a term to explain why he was annoying you.

Now that's just not true:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Harm%27s_WayOK, he didn't invent it but he did popularize it. How often was that word used preBush?

Here you go:
http://ngrams.googlelabs.com/graph?content=harm%27s+way&year_start=1800&year_end=2000&corpus=0&smoothing=3Here's "due diligence:"
http://ngrams.googlelabs.com/graph?content=due+diligence&year_start=1800&year_end=2000&corpus=0&smoothing=3change it to 2008... still show's that both are on the rise, and due diligence is more "popular" than before, but regardless:

Great site. But redo the graph for post 2000 and you will see that harm's way has been used more than it ever has after 2000.As far as being owned, looks like I am still a free man.

Looks like more of a Clinton word.
I would take a closer look. Never used as much as it was after 2000.

Actually there was a John Wayne war movie called "In Harm's Way." I think it's a useful term. "In danger" is rather vague. "In danger" could be a guy worried that his hangnail will get infected. "In harm's way," is generally understood to be 'in a potential military combat zone.' Very succinct and useful term.
Have you been responsible and thorough? Actions seem to be at odds to you "for some reason". Good luck.
I always try to do my due diligence, but sometimes when I post I just feel like I'm putting myself in harm's way.
