Dear Letsrun teachers and guidance types, my son is 14 and a freshmen in HS. Help me with these PSAT scores. His critical reading score equated to 650 to 690, he has scored an actual 650 as a 8th grader, his math which is his worst subject 480 to 530, writing scores 500 to 590. These scoring is different from the ancient days when I was in school.
Are these scores decent ? What type of progress can we expect ? he loves reading and writing and we want to encourage him.

Nowadays that's pretty good. It should say on his results form where he stacks up when compared to sophomores and juniors. The scores on psat's are in the 10's, not 100's, and they are out of 240. You need 212-219 to qualify for a national merit scholarship (different in every state, you can look it up on collegeboard.com). Unlike the reading and writing sections, you can expect the math scores to greatly improve as he takes higher level courses and learns how to actually do the problems. If he wants to improve in the other sections, the best way is to read more and look up every word he doesn't know. Good luck.
