Teachers-
I am graduating from college this May (English and History major) and want to teach/coach next year. I don't have any certification, so private/prep schools seem the only option.
My question is, when do posistions become available? Any advice on getting a job with basically no qualifications?

Not all public schools require certification. You can get a provisional certification and work to get your full certification. You can look at schools that have lost their accredidation. They often hire non-certified teachers.
Positions start to really go up in late March/early April (but depends what area you are looking at).
A lot of inner city schools will hire a male without certification and have them do a provisional liscense. They are late in posting many times though and it could be late June or early July.
Where are you? Teaching regulations vary by geography. Check with the local body that certifies and regulates teachers as well as with the schools and school boards you'd be interested in teaching for.
You're subjects are similar to mine so beware that there is very limited demand for generalists in high schools.
Best advice for getting a job is to volunteer at 3-4 schools for an hour or two every week coaching something. GET TO KNOW THE PRINCIPAL. Apply as jobs come up.
Your first step into the teaching/coaching duo profession may have to be simple volunteering. My experience has been that those who volunteer and show dedication and knowledge are in time offered a full position. (At least this is how it has worked at our son's public school multiple times in various sports/clubs).

Why don't you just get a proper certification?
