My coach is trying something new... when we come back from break we have to run at a certain pace/lap until we hear "stop".
How do I prepare for this? Should I try it on my own?

What? If you stopped until your dropped, wouldn't that mean you just stand still until your legs give out?
Do you think there is any chance that your coach could possibly be designing this test with the hope that on the day designated for you to implement this test, you will have already done it?
This "test" sounds like either a workout or a tryout/fitness test type thing. In any event, it's secondary to racing. Probably you should follow the training that is given by your coach. If no training is given, you could prepare by doing tempo runs at or around the pace of the trial.
Or, you could just do a bunch of different things until failure, like standing on your hands, or standing still in the middle of a road, or talking to the hottest girl in a bar. Some of them might lead to more progress than others, but you'll certainly familiarize yourself with the concept of doing something as long as you can or until someone else tells you to stop.
well the thing is that the pace/mile is pretty close to my mile PR/mile (and faster than my 2 mile PR/mile pace)...
Well no you stop when you're way off pace.

Its one or the other, he either tells you to run until he says stop or you stop when you're too far off pace.
drop as in you can't keep the necessary pace
