I still respect running as a sport and even as a form of recreation, but as a mode of exercise is it simply one of the worst ideas ever conceived; provides very little in the way of fitness benefits while undermining musculoskeletal health. Proper exercise should focus on challenging the skeletal muscles, not the aerobic metabolic pathway.
