60 miles of intense work is harder than jogging 100mp and will make you a better middle distance guy.
Jim Ryun often ran 100 mile weeks in high school and beyond
You sound like a newbie that is listening to the wrong crowd (mediocre marathoners).
This is what Ryun said in his own words
We were running maybe 50 or 60 miles a week, and they were pretty high-quality miles. We would run a lot of repeat quarters. One of the workouts was 40 times a quarter mile; 10 miles total, and we’d average 69 seconds a quarter in blocks of 10.

Webb was running ~50 mpw in HS and (except for the Michigan disaster) gradually moved up with Razcko to about 70 peak. Lagat told me in person (at the Boston Indoors a few years ago before he did any 5000s) that he was usually running about 50mpw. Coe was in the same range, and when El Guerrouj was in the 3:26 range his coach spoke in the UK and said he was running peak mileage of 75.
Along these same lines, Renato pointed out this week that Colm O'Connell's runners in Kenya at St. Patricks have run from 30mpw for 800 up to 60mpw (he said 100km) for long distances.
