Imagine more guys doing that today? I have major respect for Pat Tillman but there should be more and we shouldn't be in awe of him. I'm sure Tillman would think the same. I'm not old enough to have seen Feller pitch (there probably aren't many on this site who have) and he was one of the greats but I idolize him more for his service than for his pitching. 638 NFL players served in WWII. 500+ MLB players, 29 who ended in the Hall of Fame. Our generation's response to an attack much like Pearl Harbor? Pat Tillman and a few others. Sad.
While I do not support our involvement in Iraq and WWII was a very different situation, I find our poor sense of duty, apathy, and outright cowardice is deplorable.
Feller has said before that he feels serving during WWII meant just as much to him as his baseball career. He enlisted the day after Pearl Harbor, so he served the pretty much the entire length of the war. One of the best pitchers ever and by all accounts a good man.
Good riddance. One less self-righteous crotchety old geezer speaking out against The Hit King, Pete Rose. Let's hope Bud Selig and Fay Vincent are next.
In general, Feller was one of the most arrogant and condescending azz-hats ever to walk the face of the earth. Always popping off about his so-called patriotism and extremist right-wing political views. In reality, he probably spent his last days gulping Viagra and tossing off to fantasies about Sarah Palin.
