I sprained my ankle yesterday during a run, and I am trying to figure out the cause of my ankle sprain. I was running on flat, paved dirt, and somehow I lost my footing and landed awkwardly. It all happened too fast.
For those of you with knowledge in biomechanics, I have a question for you guys. I know that poor proprioception and weak evertors can increase the risk of ankle sprains, but can wearing orthotics decrease your ankle proprioception when you are running? I've read research studies that found that orthotics improve ankle proprioception when tested on a forceplate balance test, but I haven't seen any experiments examining ankle proprioception while running. Any thoughts?
FYI, I've been wearing orthotics for 8 years, and I did sprain the same ankle 15 months ago, but I went to a physical therapist and I worked on stretch/strengthening/balance exercises for 4 months (using weights, balance board, therabands, etc)
