it's supposed to be the other way round
sprinting is dependent mostly on muscle mass which is dependent on natural steroid production which is far higher in men than women, so gap shoud be biggest
in distance races, muscle mass is much less of a defining factor ( therefore steroid levels less important ) as this is more dependent on v02/haemoglobin/lactate/etc considerations
i found an empirical formula somewhere ( i'll try to find it ), but sprinting shoud differ by ~ 10% & distance by nearer 9%
this has implications : considering flo-jo's 10.49 which was wind-assisted most likely, her best that day was maybe about 10.60 - 10.65 which -> ~ 9.64 - 9.69, when men's wr was only 9.93 at the time & didn't look intrinsically matched until mo's hobbling 9.82 in '01 ( that was a high 9.6 if uninjured - 60m split of 6.33 )
jeter has gone 10.64 now -> ~ 9.68, which is ~ tyson's ability currently
also flo-jo's 21.34 -> ~ 19.40, when wr at time was 19.72 ( more like 19.60 from carl's easing down 19.75 in '83 ) - time not beaten until 19.32 in '96
