Be honest, how many of you 'almost elite' marathoners are at least a little curious about taking aim at next year's North Face 50 miler championships and win the $10,000? Seems like that should be more than enough motivation for at least a few of the sub 2:20 marathoners to give it a shot.
Maybe we will find out next year . . .
I think it could be fun for the elites here to step up to the ultra distance. It would be fun to see how it pans out. $10k is not bad. Where is the race?
I'm far from an almost elite marathoner, but really, is 10-grand going to lure anyone out of marathons and into fringe running? Wouldn't it be easier to get a part-time job for a sure thing $10,000 rather than changing your training for a longshot $10,000 for winning an ultra? They'll have to put up a lot more than $10k to attract big distance running talent to the event.
Because it would be a lot more fun than a part-time job. I have to think there are a few 30 somethings still in great form but a little burnt out on the marathon and looking for a different challenge.
I'm sure there are some sub 2:20 marathoners who are also good on trails and have the openness to go farther. That should be all that is necessary to have a good chance.
plus a part time job would require at least 10 hours a week at $20 an hour for a year. That would cut into training and it would suck. (thats if you could find a 10hr a week job that pays 20 an hour and fits your schedule)
