I took some photos today of the flaccid Metrodome roof.
I'm wondering if it's an issue for some MN runners, as I believe that the concourse or something is opened to distance running on a regular basis.

I live in MN, and the collapsed dome is not an issue for me.
I would be curious to hear from any Minnesota locals how this might effect the politics of a new stadium. Ironically, this could turnout to be a great thing for the franchise by getting people to support tax dollars for a new Viking stadium. Then again, Minnesota is a progressive state that doesn't like welfare for Billionaires. They have already financed 2 other stadiums in the last 10 years. And there is the lingering anger over the bailouts the past few years. Seems like a lot of powerful forces lining up against each other on this new stadium issue. But I'm a long time Viking fan who has never even been to Minnesota except through the airport. I don't know what the public mood is with a new stadium.

Lester Bagley had something to do with the collapse. He's no idiot.
Progressive (liberal) voters may not like corporate welfare, but progressive (liberal) politicians can't give enough, just ask GE, AIG, GM, Chrysler, Bank of America, Citigroup, etc.
Back on topic though, I hope that the voters of Minneapolis don't fund a new stadium. Nor should any municipality, county or state do so. I can't believe that sports franchises have managed to sucker cities into building their facilities. If they want to go, then go, but build your own facilities like any other business must do. If cities refused to be taken in like that, the teams would have to spend their own money.
That was no "roof". A real roof has metal, wood, asphalt, or rubber on it. That thing was just an oversized baggy.
It has been reported that this is the third time this has happened.
Another third world event for us.
Hey comrade Fool - This country gives billions to businesses to start up in a community; they get tax breaks, ordinances waived, you name it. Then when the business is successful, they move out to Mexico or Asia. Look at the TARP money we have dumped on our financial institutions. So the real suckers who are being taken are the middle class taxpayers. The deratives trade on gas prices is the perfect example. Gas is plentiful now and should be dirt cheap, instead the big bank derivative traders are keeping the price artifically high. Every time you fill up with gasoline, you should remember that about 3-4 dollars of that money is go to the above. Love'em.

Fifth....FIFTH time it has deflated...only the third time it has gotten a tear along with the deflation. All they have to do is fix the tears then re-inflate the dome. It could take some time as the tears are rather large this time.
The news I read said it was twice before. But maybe that was just a tear. Those two times however were way back in the early 80s just after the it was built. Hasn't happened for long, long time.

Freshman Physics has the highest drop/fail/withdrawal rate of any college class offered. Looks like they didn't do a degree check before they hired the engineering firm ;-)
Of course, the local news is full of conjecture about a new stadium, and about the collapse of the Metrodome roof.
It turns out that employees of the dome operator were spraying water onto the roof in effort to melt snow, in combination with an elevated temperature inside the dome.
While conspiracy theorists conjecture that it was part of an active plot to demonstrate the inadequacy of the Metrodome, I am more inclined to believe that it was just the result of incompetence and bad judgment on the part of the public-sector entity that operates the dome, the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission.
Whatever the reason for the collapse, there are rumors that the Vikings will be shopping around a new stadium proposal in January 2011. This is hardly surprising, as they shop one around every year. This year they have to contend with a projected $6B state deficit over the next biennium, so are likely to meet with a tepid response at best.
However, union labor would be required on the project, and the new Governor, who toured the site personally, owes his election to the union membership, so he'll probably come out in favor of some sort of proposal.
Minnesotans were surprised to hear, last year that the Vikings use the Metrodome rent-free: "For the past 9 seasons, however, the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission has been waiving the team's nearly $4 million dollar rent." (Wikipedia), and the current lease extension is also rent-free. I think that information mobilized latent forces opposed to any new stadium funding bill.
Our new Governor (Crazy-Eye Dayton(we're always electing these types - we get who we deserve)) has said he wants to "work with" the Vikings to see what can be done.
I think all elected officials - not including Governor - will be up for re election in 2012 because of some upcoming redistricting. The Vikings lease ends after next year - if they play at all - so the new stadium push will start in earnest soon. I don't think any of the elected officials have enough guts to be on the record for being responsible for losing the Vikings. We do, however, have a projected 2 year deficit of nearly $6 billion, and the anger that caused the MN legislature to now be controlled by the GOP for the first time in 38 years may prevent a taxpayer funded stadium.
We just built a stadium for the Gophers. I'm still baffled why we couldn't have planned to build one that both could use. It suppose other people's money is easy to spend - until it runs out.
Say it with me...Los Angeles Vikings. Sounds good, yes?
Does L.A. really need another pro football team to come out and not watch?

Cleveland could use a football team too.
Oops, I forgot. They did get one.

That's a pretty thin disguise you have, former Governor Ventura! Don't you have a book or TV show to promote?
