The latest update just downloaded and I'm not able to use the "back" arrow in the upper left hand corner.
Was this disabled for a reason? How can I enable the function again?

Uninstall and go back to an earlier version. I honestly find that Firefox gets worse with each release. Back when it was in the 2.6 phase it was great. Now, it's marginally better than IE.
I've got 3.6.13 and I can confirm I have a working back button.

Pretty much. I ended up switching to Chrome.
The last good version of Firefox was 3.5.15, which you can still download by going to mozilla.com.
3.6 has had multiple security failures, flash crashing the system, and later ones don't even do CSS right (which can be seen in some wordpress sites).
Download 3.5.15, and turn automatic updates off. Otherwise go to Chrome or Safari. Even IE is more stable than Firefox these days.
Such a shame, it was a great browser in the day.

Same here.

Firefox is still a very nice browser, but the problem is that they are simply trying to do too much with it. Additional plug-ins and features are fine, but within the IT world Firefox has become rather famous for memory leaks and industry-leading security holes. There are actually more "cons" than "pros" regarding its usage.

It has been for at least two years. Even since IE8 hit the streets to oppose Firefox 3.x, the comparison isn't even close. Personally, I would wait until Firefox 4.x is RTM... it shows a great deal of promise. Until then, stick to IE8 or Chrome.
Is there another browser that blocks ads like Firefox? Unless there is there is no better browser.

I used to feel the same way. There is an Adblock extension for Chrome.

If it comes down to a choice of more advertisements or less security, I will definitely tolerate the ads!
That being said, you can utilize a customized/secure HOSTS file to block advertisements across the board, regardless of the web browser you're using:
