Has anyone else seen these and is this the anti-vibram?

That's a trail shoe
Karl Meltzer uses those, I believe. Brooks Beast are really much more of an opposite, IMO.
No way. Check this:

Hahaha that's awesome. Just imagine running in those suckers.
Karl Meltzer runs in them.

I think I struggle with the whole concept of trail running shoes vs running shoes. I run 60-70% on trails and use Asics 2150s with no problem. I think this is just another ridiculous marketing strategy that trail and ultra types will bite. Who doesn't want to run in moonboots that "using an EVA 30% softer and increasing its total volume to 2.5 times that of a typical trail running shoe, we allow for more cushioning than any other shoe on the market today, dissipating up to 80% of the shock associated with heal striking"!!! I've done several trail races and ultras and am always struck with how gear centric trail and ultra racers seem to be...
i agree with trail running shoes being mostly a marketing ploy. when i use to work at a running store i'd tell people the typical line "if you do most of your running on trails then you're gonna want a trail shoe." of course i was like man i'd never get a trail shoe, and then one day i realized that i do pretty much all my running on trails and following my own "running store" advice would mean i should be in trail shoes. then i just laughed at the silliness of it all. pretty soon i started laughing at the silliness of the entire running shoe industry. all marketing, that's all it is.
i ran a 50 miler this spring and when i passed some dude he was like "are those the nike free's? you're crazy!" i didn't look at his shoes but i'm sure he was clogging around in some tough thick trail shoes.
I'd agree on most of your points, unless you are wearing some of the new light weight trail shoes.
For most people if they are in the Brooks Adrenaline and then want a trail shoe so they get the Brooks Adrenaline ASR, what is the point? A little more of a rugged outsole, but stiffer for the most part. Any cushioned trainer will be just fine for most of the trails out there.
Now, if you are training in a shoe like the DS Trainer or some other light weight shoe and are looking for a real trail shoe, then get something like the NB 101 or an Inov8 shoe. Then you are headed in the right direction. You are getting something lightweight, but with much better protection and grip. The comparable shoe might be a lightweight training/racing shoe that would be worthless when it comes to mud and/or rocks.
If you are training in the Frees and take them to the trail then that is fine as well. But watch out when it gets muddy and rocky. Might have a little problem at some points.

The antidote:
I'd imagine those platform shoes would put you at a high risk of spraining your ankle, especially when navigating technical trails.
I run trails in my Brooks Launch or my Kinvaras.. The Kinvaras, if they had a little more rock protection they'd be perfect out on the trails.
I have run in these shoes and I have to say they are the best shoes I have EVER run in. at first, I thought what everyone else does...WTF is this ..but then I ran in them and was amazed at the ride and the feel. you sink a bit into the shoe so that adds stability, the foam acts as a dynamic cushion/support so they feel freaking custom made to your foot. They are very light and pretty damn nimble. Best thing, IMO, is that they really do save your legs from the pounding....FYI...most of my miles are on the roads, even though these are trail shoes. Ya, they look goofy, but you get over that real quick once you run in them and realize they are awesome.
Anti vibram, no, but just a different twist on "natural" running.
With regard to trail running in regular shoes:
Keep in mind that there is a pretty wide range of off-road terrain. If you're bombing around on dual trac, or rail trails, or hardpack dirt singletrack, I completely agree that regular shoes are probably the best choice.
On the other hand, if you live/run somewhere that the terrain is more rugged, where there are a lot of exposed pointy rocks and steep climbs (and more so descents), a trail shoe can be of value. Some protection from rocks can be good, and most shoes are lacking in traction, especially on the heels (descending).

See you in a couple years when your legs and feet are so spoiled and weak from the cushion. Babied legs are anything but awesome. But hey, have at it - I could use the entertainment when I see you.
You are an elitist ass...and I would destroy in a race of any distance, regardless of footwear choice. Lube your vadge.
Couldn't agree more! Those shoes are a recipe for beat up legs. I have a hard enough time with the softness of Kinvara's. These things would be a nightmare!
